Aspiring to progress to Higher Nitec courses after your Nitec course?

Here is an opportunity for you to realise your dreams. Application for progression to Higher Nitec courses will be open in January 2010 (The exact application dates will be published in the Straits Times and the New Paper and ITE website following the release of 2009 GCE ‘O’ Level Exam results).

The following FAQs will help to guide you in your application. Do consult your class advisor if you need further advice on the progression.

1. Who can apply for progression to Higher Nitec courses?

The eligibility criteria for application for progression to Higher Nitec courses are:

1.1 Applicants must be Nitec graduates or full-time Nitec students who are in their final term of study with the following minimum GPA score (including CCA bonus) in their Nitec courses:

Information on the progression path will be provided in the ITE website nearer to the commencement of the intake;

1.2 Applicants must be able to attend classes which will start in Apr 2010; and

1.3 NS liable applicants who are offered a Higher Nitec course and are 20 years old and above, as at 1 Jan of course commencement year, must obtain approval from the Central Manpower Base (CMPB), Deferment Office, for NS deferment before making fee payment and enrolling into the course. If their NS deferments are not approved by CMPB, they will be withdrawn from their course.

2. How do applicants apply?

- Applicants can go to the ITE homepage at www.ite.edu.sg, click on "Application for Full-Time Higher Nitec Courses for April 2010 Intake" and follow the online instructions to submit their application via the internet.

- Applicants without internet access can use the computers at ITE Colleges offering Higher Nitec courses.

3. When will the application results be released?

The application results for progression to Higher Nitec will be released on:

The Emperor and the Flower Seeds

Long ago, in a faraway kingdom, there lived an Emperor who loved nature. Anything he planted burst into bloom. Up came flowers, bushes and even big fruit trees, as if by magic! Of everything in nature, he loved flowers most of all, and he tended his own garden every day. But the emperor was very old, and he needed to choose a successor to the throne. Who would his successor be? And how would the emperor decide? As the emperor loved flowers so much, he decided flowers would help him choose.

The next day, a proclamation was issued: “All men, women, boys and girls throughout the land are to come to the palace.” The news created great excitement throughout the land.

In a village not far from here, there lived a young girl named Serena. Serena had always wanted to visit the palace and see the Emperor, and so she decided to go. She was glad she went. How magnificent the palace was! It was made from gold and studded with jewels of every colour and type – diamonds, rubies, emeralds, opals and amethysts. How the palace gleamed and sparkled! Serena felt that she had always known this place. She walked through the palace doors into the Great Hall, where she was overwhelmed by all the people. It was so noisy. “The whole kingdom must be here!” she thought.

There then arrived the sound of at least a hundred trumpets, announcing the arrival of the emperor. All fell silent. The Emperor entered, clutching what looked like a small box. How fine he looked – so noble and elegant! He circled the Great Hall, greeting every person and presenting something to each one. Serena was curious about the small box. “What was inside?” she wondered. “What was he giving to everyone?”

At last, the Emperor reached Serena. She curtsied and then watched as the Emperor reached into the small box and presented her with a flower seed. When Serena received the seed, she became the happiest girl of all.

Then the sound of trumpets filled the Great Hall once more, and all became silent. The Emperor announced: “Whoever can show me the most beautiful flowers in a year’s time will succeed me to the throne!”

Serena left for home filled with wonder over the palace and the Emperor, clutching the flower seed carefully in her hand. She was certain she could grow the most beautiful flower. She filled a flowerpot with rich soil, planted the seed carefully and watered it every day. She couldn’t wait to see it sprout, grow and blossom into a magnificent flower!

Days passed, but nothing grew in the pot. Serena was worried. She transferred the seed into a bigger pot; filled it with the best quality, richest soil she could find; and watered it twice a day, every day. Days, weeks and months passed, but still nothing happened. By and by the whole year passed. Finally spring came, and it was time to return once more to the palace. Serena was heartbroken that she had no flower to show the Emperor, not even a little sprout. She thought that everyone would laugh at her because all she had to show for the whole year’s effort was a pot of lifeless soil. How could she face the Emperor with nothing?

Her friend stopped by on his way to the palace, holding a great big flower. “Serena! You’re not going to the Emperor with an empty pot, are you?” said the friend. “Couldn’t you grow a great big flower like mine?” Serena’s father, having overheard this, put his arm around Serena and consoled her. “It is up to you whether you go or not,” said the father. “You did your best, Serena, and your best is good enough to present to the Emperor.”

Even though she felt reluctant to go, Serena also knew she must not disrespect the Emperor’s wishes. Besides, she also wanted to see the Emperor and the palace again. And so, Serena traveled once more to the palace, holding the pot of soil in her hands.

The Emperor was happy to see the Great Hall filled with his subjects, all proudly displaying their beautiful flowers, all eagerly hoping to be chosen. How beautiful all the flowers were! Flowers were of every shape, size and colour. The Emperor examined each flower carefully and thoroughly, one by one. Serena, who was hiding in a corner with her head bowed down, wondered how he could choose, since they were all so lovely. Finally, the Emperor came to Serena. She dared not look at him. “Why did you bring an empty pot?” the Emperor asked Serena. “Your majesty,” said Serena. “I planted the seed you gave me and I watered it every day, but it didn’t sprout. I put it in a better pot with better soil, but still it didn’t sprout. I tended it all year long, but nothing grew. So today I brought an empty pot without a flower. It was the best I could do.”

When the Emperor heard those words, a smile spread slowly over his face, and he took Serena by the hand. Serena was frightened. She wondered if she were in some sort of trouble.

The Emperor led her to the front of the Great Hall, and turning to the crowd, he exclaimed: “I have found my successor – the person worthy of ruling after me!”

Serena was puzzled. “But, your majesty,” she said, “I have no flower, just this pot of lifeless earth.”

”Yes, I expected that,” said the Emperor. “From where everyone else got their seeds, I do not know. The seeds I gave everyone last year had all been roasted. It would have been impossible for any of them to grow. Serena, I admire your great courage and honesty top appear before me with the truth. I reward you with my entire kingdom. You will be the next Empress.”

PSEA to pay school fees

A new mode of payment for school fees using their Post Secondary Education Account (PSEA) is now available to the students.
2 All Singaporean students born after 1 Jan 1988 will have a PSEA.
3 The PSEA is administered by MOE and is opened for all eligible Singaporeans. By now, your students should have received a mailer from MOE introducing this scheme. They may also visit the MOE website http://www.moe.gov.sg/finance/PSEA/ for more information.
4 The 1st batch of students who can start to use the PSEA would be those from the Jan 07 & 08 intakes for payment of Jul 08 fees. They would be informed via SMS to apply by 15 May 08.
5 Students need to take note of the following :-
(i) students to fill in the downloaded Standing Order Form from the MOE website
(ii) students to submit it to their respective CAs for collation by 12 May 08
(Note to CAs – please pass the collated forms to the counter staff at the CVC once you receive the forms)
(iii) students to submit them to CVC directly after 12 May 08
(iv) MOE would inform the students directly on the outcome of the application

CE Photography Exhibition 2008

The Photography Club - with support from Student Development - has organized a photography competition for CE students. If you have enthusiasts among your students we hope that you will encourage them to join this competition. Winning entries will be exhibited from 4 - 22 August, during the Arts Under the Stars Concert 2008 and at the National Library in 2009. The competition details are as follows:
Theme: Earth. Fragile. Handle With Care.
What we're looking for: Images that capture the importance of environmental consciousness. For example, the beauty of nature that must be preserved and protected, or at the other end of the spectrum, actions - even little ones - which contribute to the destruction and depletion of the earth's resources.
Information & Entry Form: Participants should collect an entry form and a copy of the competition rules & regulations from the Student Development Centre.
Submission: Entries must be submitted to Student Development Centre by Friday, 30 May 2008 together with the entry form.
Prizes: 1st - $100 voucher; 2nd - $80 voucher; 3rd - $50 voucher; and 10 consolation prizes.

ITE had been supporting the bid for the Youth Olympic Games 2010. Some of the activities mounted by us to signify our support includes organising well-wishes Signing Session, producing a video to show our support and putting up banners to show our support.
We are now working with Dr William Tan to launch the final round of event to support the YOG bid. In his wheelchair, Dr William Tan will travel a total of 50km (ie 125 round the track) in CE. He will be inviting other para-olympians to join him. The rest of us will be following behind and can stop at anytime to rest. One of us will be holding an Olympic torch and follow closely behind Dr Tan. We will take turn to run with the torch.
Staff and students are invited to run along Dr Tan. The event will be held on Monday 18 Feb 2008 starting at 4pm. We hope to complete the event by 9pm.
My apologies for informing you so late. Please inform your students to join the run if they are able to do so. You are also invited to participate anytime between 4pm and 9pm. Hope to see you on there.

Learning Programming

I find that majority of you guys still feed daunted or fearful about programming. Do not be impatient with your learning. In fact, in order to be really solid programmer, you need about ten years.

Myself, it took me quite a bit of effort to learn my first language and countless days of effort to learn to master a language. Up to now, I must say that I am not even a guru of it but I do know how to get my work done.

Programming is really a form of art, learning to Solve Problems.
Be patient, it takes a while for you to learn the syntax and keywords and also a while to know when to use what.

But there are some keys in learning success:

1. Enjoy and have fun doing programming. Find things that u might like to program.

2. Start with small tasks and problems.

3. Look at other people's code and understand how they solve problems

4. Practise! Practise! Practise!

A lot of times, I like to compare a run just like our life. Even in ITE...All of us must have a goal like a runner, aiming for the finishing line, and not running aimlessly.

Running is a sport that I enjoyed and often used as my stress reliever. I had run 3 marathons so far and even looking back, I wonder how I can finish 42 km.

But one thing I like about running marathon is that you are running with a big group of people and all aiming to complete it. Tired?? Yes! Give up??? Never.

So even as some of you are running, I hope you can use this to ponder your life in ITE. We are one big family, supporting each other when we are tired. There will be times that you might feel down but I believe all of us can achieve greater heights supporting one another!!

So as all of you journey your 2 years in ITE, I hope you can...

NAFPA Test Schedule is 30 jan 0800-1200

NAPFA test is COMPULSORY. ALL students are to take the test during the schedule given.
Classes are to report PUNCTUALLY for NAPFA test (ie 0800hrs or 1400hrs). Reporting place is at the Stadium.
Classes will only come for the dates they are scheduled for.
Students are to be in PROPER PE/SPORTS ATTIRE. Those without proper attire will not be allowed to take the NAPFA test.
Students are to bring along their Student Pass or I/C, or any identification card with their I/C barcode on it. This is ensure the smooth running of the test and to reduce waiting time.

Ez Link Matters

Students who have yet to take your photos, proceed to Student Activity Centre (B02-16) to take their photos on 11 Jan 08 (Fri), 8.30am to 5.30pm. Students who take their photos on a later date will receive their ez-link cards later.
Students who are unable to take their photos on 11 Jan 08 can take their photos between 14 to 25 Jan, 11 am to 3 pm at the Student Activity Centre (B02-16).
Students under sponsorship are not eligible for concession rate.
Students can extend their secondary school ez-link cards with effect from 14 Jan 2008 at any TransitLink ticket office/ Add value machine. The cards can then be used till mid March after which they will receive their ITE ez-link cards.
All notices on ez-link card matters will soon be posted on the ITECE website. All students are to check back regularly at ITECE website for updates of your status for application of ez-link card.

SFCCA Bursary Award 2008

The Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) is offering a bursary of $400 to full-time ITE students. Application is open to all 1st & 2nd year ITE students.
Jan 08 & Apr 08 intake students Deadline : 23 Apr 08

Eligibility Criteria

Must be a Chinese student who is a Singapore citizen or PR;
Must be a full-time ITE student;
Gross household income < $1,000 or PCI (Per Capital Income) below $300; and
Must not in receipt of any scholarship or bursary within the same academic year.

If youmeet the above criteria and are keen to apply, get a copy of the application from CVC. Students will need to enclose all the supporting documents stated in the form. Thereafter, deposit the form and supporting income documents into the Student Services dropbox.

Please Note : Students who qualify to apply for the CDC & CCC-ITE bursary in Jan 08 should not apply for the SFCCA bursary. This is because the CDC bursary is worth $600-$800 while the SFCCA bursary is only for $400. The SFCCA bursary would be suitable for the Apr 07 intake students or for students whose family income exceeds $1,500 but PCI is still below $300.

CDC & CCC-ITE Bursary is open for application on 7 Jan 08 and ends 5 Feb 08.

Eligibility Criteria of the CDC & CCC-ITE Bursary

Is a Singapore Citizen.
Gross household income is $1,500 per month or below.
Is not in receipt of the CDC & CCC-ITE Scholarship or any other ITE Scholarship.
Is not in receipt of a monthly training allowance as a sponsored student or trainee.

Jan 08 Intake Students - Forms are available at the CVC.
Alternatively, for the bursary online (thru' the Student Portal), Students may still do so. Students will need to submit supporting income documents into the Bursary dropbox at CVC by Wed 23 Jan 08.
Important to Note:

Student must indicate the names of both parents on the application form. If parents are divorced, separated or deceased, the student must indicate the status "Divorced /Separated /Deceased" under the column "Occupation". Otherwise, there will be a delay in the processing of applications by the Community Centres.
Student MUST submit supporting income documents (payslip, employer's letter, IR8A/Income Tax Assessment or income declaration form) together with the application form. Adults who are not working must declare a "NIL" income using our income declaration form. Deposit these into the Bursary dropbox located at the CVC or collated by the CAs by Wed 23 Jan 08.
Incomplete submission of income documents will delay the processing of the bursary.
Students may log into their Student Portal to check the status of their bursary applications (Approved/Rejected) after 17 Feb 08. CAs will also received a list of students who applied for bursary and their status of application then.
Successful bursary applicants will be notified by their respective Community Centres to collect the cheques. This would usually take place sometime end Mar/mid Apr 08. Upon receipt of the bursary award, students may use the bursary monies to pay their fees.
